The quality of Garnet depends upon its cut, colour and clarity. The stone should be neatly polished with a smooth and cut surface. The cut and shape of Garnet gemstones only has ornamental significance and not astrological.
Colour: The best quality Garnets come from having a pure and uniform color. It has a variety of variants which are available in almost every colour. 
Clarity:  Garnets are graded as Type II on the clarity scale meaning there might be some internal inclusions in the gemstone. Higher clarity gemstones are preferred for astrological purposes.
Cut:  In order to improve aesthetics gemstones are put through the cutting process. A faceted cut will fetch a higher premium instead of a round or oval Garnet. 
Origin: Different types of Garnets are found in different parts of the world. It was most recently found in Madagascar and since has been discovered in the USA, Russia, Kenya, Tanzania and parts of Turkey.
